New York City– Brooklyn will now be home to it first-ever minor league hockey team, Representative Anthony D. Weiner (D – Brooklyn and Queens) and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz announced today. The “Brooklyn Aces”, a single ‘A’ level team in the Eastern Professional Hockey League (EPHL), will start their season in November.

Aces Head Coach Chris Firriolo recognized Rep. Weiner for his long-standing support of hockey in New York City and presented him with a team jersey. The Coach also invited him back to the Aces’ 1st Annual Pro Prospect Camp in September.

The Aces, who will play out of Aviator Sports (cap. 2,500) at Floyd Bennett Field, are a part of the new EPHL, a professional single 'A’ level hockey league for mid-sized markets. For its first season, the league will include five teams, including the Danbury Mad Hatters (Danbury, CT), the Jersey Rockhoppers (West Orange, NJ), the Copper City Chiefs, (Rome, NY), and the New Hampshire Freeze (Exeter, NH). The team will play 25 home games, starting on November 1, 2008. Tickets will cost between $9 and $20.

Rep. Weiner said, “I hope this will attract more visitors who will come for slap shots and body checks, but stay to see the wildlife and nature trails.”

Borough President Markowitz said, “From the Cyclones and the Association of Volleyball Professionals to the Aces and the soon-to-be Nets, Brooklyn is really playing in the big leagues when it comes to professional sports. Congratulations to the Aces and the Eastern Professional Hockey League as they prepare to face off at center ice at Aviator and give fans period after period of exciting hockey ‘Brooklyn style’—plenty of goal scoring with some ‘in-your-face’ forechecking, slap shots and hat tricks.”
